Beyond Taipei: Which Taiwan Region Fits a Short Trip?
If you're picking just one city for a trip of three nights or fewer, here's what to base it on — trip length, interests, and who you're traveling with, in one table.

"I've done Taipei — where next?" or "It's my first time in Taiwan; does it have to be Taipei?" These questions come up constantly. Based on real traveler experiences, here's how Taiwan's main regions match different schedules and tastes.
01 · Region Picker at a Glance
| Kaohsiung | Tainan | Taichung | Hualien | |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Suggested stay | 2–3 nights | 2+ nights | 2 nights | 2+ nights |
| Good for | Harbor city, relaxed downtown | Old streets, temples, food | Cafés, markets, nearby nature | Mountains, sea, scenery |
| Getting around | Easy by MRT and light rail | Walk or taxi in town | Mostly bus and taxi | Many spots need a car |
| Watch out | Sights are spread out | Strong midday heat | Few MRT lines | Parts of Taroko closed (as of Sep 2026) |
02 · First Trip: Taipei vs. Kaohsiung
These are the two cities first-timers compare most. Taipei wins on density of sights and day-trip options like Jiufen and Yehliu; Kaohsiung feels more relaxed with the sea close by, but sights are farther apart. Both cities have international airports, so many travelers decide by flight schedules and prices.
3 nights or fewer, first time: Taipei The densest transit network means fewer routing mistakes and easy day trips.
Hate crowds: Kaohsiung Less crowded, with plenty of harbor and riverside walks for a slower pace.
Second trip: Tainan or Taichung Food-focused Tainan and café-and-market Taichung get great reviews from repeat visitors.
03 · By Travel Companion
With kids Shorter transfers help. Taipei and Kaohsiung, with easy city transit, are safe picks.
With parents If you need less walking and fewer stairs, build the trip around a city where taxis are easy.
Friends or couples With clear tastes, a themed destination like Tainan (food) or Hualien (nature) tends to satisfy most.
04 · If You're Choosing Hualien
Hualien tourism is recovering after the 2024 earthquake and 2025 floods, but Taroko National Park has only some trails open, with major sections closed for reconstruction (as of October 2026). Check the park's notices for open sections before you go.
"When picking one city, ask what you want to do before asking how many days you have." — a summary of advice from travelers who've explored several regions.
Once you've picked a region, start with that city's food map. See the Kaohsiung restaurant map, Tainan restaurant map, Taichung restaurant map, and Hualien restaurant map. If eating is the point of the trip, start with Tainan street food and A-Cai Beef Soup, known for its morning beef soup.
