Hualien Travel Guide · Where to Stay

Where to Stay in Hualien: Station, Downtown, or Sea View?

The right answer depends on whether you arrive by train, rent a car, and what you want to do in the evening — broken down by each factor.

"First time in Hualien — is near the station easier, or somewhere with a sea view?" Hualien's sights are spread out, so hotel location shapes how tiring the whole trip feels. Based on real traveler experiences, here are the pros and cons of each area.

03 · Hualien in 2026: What to Know

Hualien tourism is recovering after the 2024 earthquake and 2025 floods, and local media reported strong hotel bookings over 2026 holidays. Taroko National Park, however, has only some trails open, with major sections such as Shakadang, Swallow Grotto, and the Tunnel of Nine Turns closed for reconstruction, and Provincial Highway 8 under timed traffic control (as of October 2026).

✓

Check which Taroko sections are open Before booking near the gorge, confirm on the park's notices that the trails you want are open.

✓

Book early for holidays Hotels near the station fill first when domestic travelers pour in.

✓

Check refund rules Typhoons can cut off transport, so free-cancellation rates are safer.

04 · Combos by Trip Type

For one night, the station area is enough. For two, a popular combo is downtown for the night market on night one and the seaside for night two. If you're heading down the East Rift Valley, consider a rental car and a hotel outside town.

"In Hualien, decide how you'll get around first — the hotel choice follows." — a summary of what travelers who've been to Hualien often say.

If you stay downtown, plenty of restaurants are within walking distance. Look around your hotel on the Hualien restaurant map, and check Hualien Taiwanese restaurants too. For a snack, there's the pepper-cake stall Bawang Pepper Cake, and for early morning or late night, the soy-milk shop Gai Shi Doujiang (蓋世豆漿宵夜).

This guide is based on travelers' Hualien experiences, national park information, and local news reports (as of September 2026). Open sections and road controls change often, so check official notices before you go.
